I recently got the old king's quest series through gog.com. I am stuck on 3. been there for some time. I am around the 26-27 minute mark and have every item other than going to the store. I can not get past the Bandit's house. I have restored and re entered the house so many times, and the dude just will not go to sleep. I have even started over numerous times, even cheated with a walkthrough, and even following that, the bandit is still awake so I save and restore about 15 times in a row, and still, get bonked out of the tree. Is it a glitch or something? I know what to do, but it's not happening. I completely exited the game, restored and once I got in there, but forgot to save and well, back to the drawing board. even restored where I was successfull once and nope, no go.

You have seen the bandits talking in the tavern first and tried to talk to them, right? And then eavesdropped as a fly, flown into the tree as a fly, and seen the rope? Only then should you be able to get the rope and climb into the tree.
Have you tried slowing the game down as much as you can?

I finally got it. I had done what you suggested, up to the fly part because I am not at the fly stage just yet, but, I started it over and got it the first shot. Have no idea what that was about. Part of it was, when I got stuck, I followed a walk through up to that point to see if I was doing something wrong, come to find out, I followed a bad walk through. I saved where it said and was restoring at the wrong time the whole time.

I used to have that happen a lot. For some reason, there seems to be a huge likelihood that the bandit will still be awake every time. Maybe you have to do some other trigger, like leaving the whole screen with the tree and returning, before the bandit might fall asleep again.
