Good Old Games is a site where you can buy older games, without DRM and with XP-Vista compatible. It doesn't look like there are any adventure games in their catalog, and the site is still in the beta phase, but it's definitely something that you should keep any eye on.

The same way that the new collections were "XP Compatible", by DOSBox.

I honestly don't know if they've licensed DosBox, as I haven't bought any of the games they offer. However, it'd seem a little odd for some of these titles to be using DosBox as many are quite recent (2002 to 2003 recent).

It's not a matter of "licensing" DOSBox, as it is GPL'd. There was quite a discussion on the official DOSBox forum about GOG. The DOS games on GOG are XP/Vista compatible the same way as the new collections were - by DOSBox.

So they used DosBox. Good for them. Why's it such a big deal?

I believe Collector's point is that they didn't actually make the games compatible. They're just passing out DOSbox with it. You can use DOSbox to play the games on XP/Vista but using emulation doesn't equal compatibility.

Am I the only person who actually tends to prefer emulation? Not necessarily Dosbox in particular, but any emulation. I find it more convenient, and less prone to hardware or media failure.

In some ways this is better than to rework the games. The DOS games will always be compatible with a DOS emulator. A game patched to run on modern Windows may only be compatible till the next version of Windows. In addition, with DOSBox you don't need GOG if you already have the game. The concept of GOG is good if you do not already own these games.
