Warning: This page contains huge spoilers for the games, especially who was murdered and who was the murderer. If you have not finished the game, do not read any further!
You may have encountered with this while watching mystery movie or reading a book: the author spreads various clues all over the plot, some essential and some false. The detective must be careful to pick the former, and must not let the latter confuse him/her. How about you? Can you tell if the clues you picked up are true or false? Some clues can lead to differing conclusions and theories, depending on how you interpret them! If you know of any more false clues, please post them on the Sierra Planet Forums, and they might be added to this list!
- The hanky Laura Bow can find near Gertrude Dijon's room bears the initials 'EP'. It belongs to Ethel Prune.
- In the beginning of Act 3, when Dr. Wilbur C. Feels is murdered, there are feathers on the floor of the library. The feathers belong to Gloria Swansong, and she had a motive -- Dr. Feels knew about her "embarrassing medical problem," whatever that means.
- Laura can overhear a conversation between Clarence Sparrow and Dr. Feels. Clarence had a motive, too: Dr. Feels was about to tell the Colonel that he and Clarence had embezzled his money.
- Clarence had a motive to kill Gloria: if Laura heard her conversations with Rudy Dijon and Clarence, Laura learns that she had broken up with Clarence. And do not forget what Polly tells when Laura feeds him: 'I'll teach her! She can't break up with me!'
- Rudy had motive to kill Fifi: she refused him.
- Rudy had motive to kill Clarence: Laura saw them fighting outside, and Rudy warned Clarence to stay away from Gloria.
- Laura can overhear a conversation between Clarence and Gertie. Clarence told Gertie that Ethel refused to sell him the property near the river, so he had to "take action." Therefore, Clarence had a motive to kill Ethel.
- If Laura Bow asks Rameses Najeer about Dr. Pippin Carter at the banquet, Rameses curses him harshly and wishes him death. -- Templeton (8-1-2000)
- Near the mummy containing the body of Dr. Carter, Laura can find an ankh. Now, the ankh belongs to Dr. Tut Smith, and we all know how much the two men hated each other. Knowing also Dr. Smith's fanaticism, he is the most obvious suspect.
- When Yvette Delacroix was conversing with Dr. Smith, she said that she had "kept his secret safe." She probably walked in on the murder since she was supposed to have a meeting with Dr. Carter at 8:00 PM in the Egyptian Exhibit. Then she returned to her office whispered about what she saw to Dr. Olympia Myklos because she loves death and dead things ("Oh my! Oh ... my! Oh my!"). -- Audra (12-31-2001)
- If Laura reads Dr. Carter's notepad after using the charcoal on it, it says that Dr. Carter made an appointment with Yvette at the room where you find his body. Also, the appointment was scheduled to 8:00 PM, and Dr. Carter was murdered at 8:15 PM! -- Templeton (4-24-2000)
- Near the mummy containing the body of Dr. Carter, there is a print of woman shoe. The print may belong to Yvette or Dr. Myklos or Countess Lavinia Waldorf-Carlton, but they did not have a motive.
- When I first played the game, I used the shoe of Yvette's found in her office on the print of the shoe to see if they would match up, but it did not work. However, I think that if you look at the shoe in inventory, the game says that it is a petite shoe and that the bloody print looks kind of small. -- Susan (2-12-2000)
- Response to Susan's comment: Yes, if you look at the shoe in the inventory, you will get a message saying it is "a petite size 6," so it is logical that the shoe was used to make the misleading print. How it was made? Maybe Yvette stepped in the blood, or the murderer somehow got her shoe and made the print. -- Templeton (2-12-2000)
- Wolf Heimlich always appears in the places where the dagger is and throws Laura out -- at the gift shop and at the preservation lab. He also throws Laura out of the Old Masters Gallery at Act 2, specifically ordering Laura NOT to touch the (forgery) paintings!-- Susan (4-30-1999)
- The Countess was involved in stealing paintings. If Wolf were to find this out, it might be enough for him to take lethal action, especially considering how he is always obsessing over the dagger thief and how he would use his Heimlich Death Maneuver on the thief if he ever found him. Also, when questioned about the dagger theft, he lapsed into regressed memories about when he let his mother's paintings be stolen. Museum security, especially painting security, was actually personal with him! His knowledge of torture, weapons, his creation of a death maneuver, the blood and flesh on his interrogation chair -- it does not seem unreasonable that he would kill, especially given this motivation. -- Audra (12-31-2001)
- Yvette died by being plastered. If Laura examines her corpse with the magnifying glass, the game may give a message (in the DOS version) pointing to Steve Dorian as a suspect -- and he did tell Laura that he made plaster statues, didn't he?
- The red hairs in Yvette's hand and on the desk in her office may also suggest that Steve was the murderer, but he was not the only red-haired character.
- When Laura examines Yvette's body, there are bifocals in her right hand. The people who wore glasses were Dr. Archibald Carrington and Rameses Najeer.
- If Laura turns on the intercom in Dr. Carrington's office, she can hear very interesting conversations, like Ernie Leach threatening Ziggy. Furthermore, it is obvious that Ziggy's murderer used the wire cutters to make the Pterodactyl fall on the body. The cutters were found in Ernie's toolbox.
- If Laura asks Lo Fat about Dr. Myklos, he will say that she always wears black. If Laura asks Dr. Myklos about Lo Fat, she will say her shrouds are always cleaned well. This may be associated with the black cloak of the murderer chasing Laura in Act 5. Besides, she loves dead things. -- Susan (4-30-1999)
- If Laura eavesdrops on Wolf and Dr. Myklos, you will hear them wishing to be in charge of the museum. -- Susan (4-30-1999)
- During a conversation between Dr. Myklos and Wolf in his office, he told her that he wanted to kill the Countess just because someone let her in and out of the museum. He was probably just joking at the moment, but the fact that he mentioned it indicated that it did bother him somewhat. Dr. Myklos also mentions in this scene that she wants to find the bodies first, and it is known that she likes to see her snake Barney kill things. Dr. Myklos later walks into her office to find the Countess tied up and dying of a snake bite. -- Audra (12-31-2001)
- When Laura questions Wolf about the snake oil and snake lasso, he mentions both times how he is not afraid of snakes. In fact, snakes are afraid of him. -- Audra (12-31-2001)
- Dr. Myklos was quite shocked to find the Countess dying on her office desk. Dr. Myklos had told Laura twice before that she loved getting startled because it keeps the blood flowing, and she loves death and probably even better ... seeing something die. Wolf had given her presents before such as the bone, and a dying body would be the ultimate gift. Dr. Myklos had asked Wolf to lift her onto his desk. Dr. Myklos is a tall and sturdy woman, so if Wolf could lift her up, he could definitely lift the Countess up, and used smelling salts to keep her awake for Dr. Myklos to find her.
