SECTION 2 - INSTALLING THE GAME

Small Install:
Insert the CD into your CD ROM drive. After your Macintosh mounts the CD onto your desktop you will see several files in a window named KQ7 CD. Before you play the game, you must install Sound Manager 3.0 and QuickTime™ on your Macintosh. Open the folder "IMPORTANT System Files" and drag the four items from this folder to the System Folder on your hard drive. As the items copy to the hard drive you will receive the message "These items need to be stored in special places inside the System Folder in order to be available to the Macintosh. Put them where they belong?". Choose OK for each item. After doing this, you will need to restart your Macintosh, so that the new items you copied to your System Folder will take effect. Choose Restart from the Special pull down menu. To start the game, double click on the "King's Quest VII" application.

SECTION 3 - COMMON STARTUP PROBLEMS

Problem: When trying to start the game you get the message "This Sierra game requires Sound Manager 3.0. (Included in you game folder. See your installation guide.)". Please note: the error message contains a misspelling.
Solution: Sound Manager 3.0 is an extension, (included on the King's Quest VII CD ROM), that must be in the "Extensions" folder within your "System Folder" for the game to run. Follow the installation procedures in Section 2 - Installing the Game for information on installing Sound Manager 3.0.

Problem: The game gets an "System Error Type 1" after startup.
Solution: This message indicates that the Macintosh needs more memory to run the application. On some Macintosh computers, King's Quest VII may need more than 5000K of memory. If you encounter this message, you should first do a Large Install of the game-(see Section 2 for instructions). Once the game is on your hard drive, open the "King's Quest VII HD" folder and single click on the "King's Quest VII HD" icon. Choose Get Info from the Edit pull down menu. Increase the values for Minimum size and Preferred size to 5200K. The Macintosh will now use more memory to run King's Quest VII. If the error continues, increase the values for Minimum and Preferred size by 100K increments until the problem is eliminated.

Problem: The game locks up, only displaying a black screen with a yellow crown.
Solution: The game is trying to use a sound device that is not present on your Macintosh. Move the "King's Quest VII HD" folder on your hard drive and double click on the application "MIDI Utilities." Click on the continue button at the welcome screen and then choose the option "Change Sound...". You will get three choices for your sound device. Unless you have a General MIDI device or an MT 32 connected to you Macintosh, choose "SoundDriver.drv" by double clicking on it. If you are not sure if you have a General Midi device or an MT 32, then you should choose "SoundDriver.drv" by double clicking on it.

Problem: When trying to start the game you get a message stating, "There is not enough memory to open "King's Quest VII" (5,000K needed, x,xxxK available).".
Solution: You need to free up more memory for the game. See Section 4 - Memory Troubleshooting for help freeing up memory.

SECTION 4 - MEMORY TROUBLESHOOTING

King's Quest VII requires 5000K of free memory. In order to have enough 5000k of free memory, you must have 8 MB of RAM installed on your Mac. Utilities such as RAM Doubler or virtual memory will not serve as a substitute for having 8 MB of physical RAM installed.

To determine the amount of RAM and the free memory on your Mac, do the following: From the Apple pull-down menu, choose "About this Macintosh...". The amount of RAM on your computer will be listed next to "Built-In Memory". (If you do not have a "Built-In Memory" value, use the amount listed next to "Total Memory".) This amount should be at least 8192K, which is equal to 8 MB. Once you have verified that you have 8 MB of RAM, check your free memory. This will be listed as the "Largest Unused Block". If this value is not at least 5000K, try the following steps below.

Change your memory settings. From the Apple pull-down menu, choose "Control Panels". From here, select the "Memory" module. In the memory module, lower your disk cache to 32K and turn off your RAM disk and virtual memory. Also, turn your 32-bit addressing on. Once you have done this, you must restart your Mac for the changes to take effect.

Turn off your extensions and control panel devices. Extensions and control panel devices (cdev's) load utilities on your system and use memory that King's Quest VII needs. The unnecessary ones should be disabled when the game is running. This can be done in two ways. Using Extensions Manager is preferable; otherwise you will need to manually disable them.

If you have Extensions Manager installed on your computer, double-click on its icon in the Control Panels section. To begin, click on the "All Off" button. Now scroll through the list of items and select the ones that you will need to play King's Quest VII. Choose EM Extension, Apple CD-ROM, Apple Multimedia Tuner, Sound Manager 3.0, QuickTime™ and Sound. Once you have done this, click on the "Sets" pull-down menu. Choose "Save Set..." and enter a name for this King's Quest VII extension set. With only the set for the game selected, restart your Mac. Check your memory and try to play the game. (For more information on using Extensions Manager, please see the documentation for your system software or the readme file with Extensions Manager.)

If you do not have Extensions Manager, you will have to manually disable extensions and cdev's. To do this, open the System Folder and create a new folder called Backup. Go in to your Extensions folder and move all of the items in it-except for QuickTime™, Sound Manager 3.0 and Apple CD-ROM-to the newly created Backup folder. Now, go into your Control Panels folder and move all of the items from it-except for Sound, Monitors and Memory-to the Backup folder. After doing this, restart your Mac and play the game. CAUTION: The items moved into the Backup folder will not be active until they are returned to the Extensions folder and the computer is restarted. When you are done playing the game, move all of the extensions and cdev's in the Backup folder back to the System Folder. When the system asks to "put them where they belong", choose OK and your system will be restored to its normal state.

If you are using version 7.5.3 of the Mac Operating System. There is a free upgrade to System 7.5.5 available from Apple that fixes memory management problems that might effect King's Quest 7. The upgrade is available from Apple's WWW site (http://www.apple.com). We highly recommend that 7.5.3 users upgrade before playing King's Quest 7.

SECTION 5 - COMMON GAME PROBLEMS

Problem: When clicking on one of the numbers to choose a chapter to begin a new game, you hear a click sound but nothing happens.
Explanation: This problem will occur when playing the game in a window on a monitor set to a resolution higher than 640 x 480.
Solution 1: From the Apple pull down menu, choose Control Panels then choose Monitors. Click on the Options button to get a list of resolutions supported by your Macintosh. Choose 640 x 480; you will see the monitor change resolutions. Back out of the Control Panels by closing the windows for Monitors. When you get back to your Desktop, restart your Mac and play the game.
Solution 2: Instead of clicking with the mouse, use the number keys to select a chapter.

Problem: When clicking on one of the options after your character expires, you get a click sound but nothing happens.
Explanation: This problem will occur when playing the game in a window on a monitor set to a higher resolution than 640 x 480.
Solution 1: From the Apple pull down menu, choose Control Panels then choose Monitors. Click on the Options button to get a list of resolutions supported by your Macintosh. Choose 640 x 480; you will see you monitor change resolutions. Back out of the Control Panels by closing the windows for Monitors. When you get back to your Desktop, restart your Mac and play the game.
Solution 2: Click on the button for your selection and hold down the mouse button. While still depressing the mouse button, hit the [Return] key.

Problem: When trying to watch the introduction you receive a "Bus error..." message.
Solution: This error will occur when trying to play the introduction on a Power Macintosh with the Modern Memory Manager turned on. In order to watch the introduction, you will need to turn the Modern Memory Manager off. Go to the Control Panels under the Apple pull down menu and double click on the Memory icon. Look for the section titled Modern Memory Manager and click on the Off button. You will need to restart your Macintosh for the change to take effect on your computer. Choose Restart from the Special pull down menu.

Problem: When trying to watch the introduction you receive a message, "QuickTime has not been installed in this system. You will not be able to view movies but you can continue with the game. To install QuickTime, drag the QT init into your System folder and reboot."
Solution: QuickTime™ is required to view the movie introduction for King's Quest VII. The QuickTime™ extension included with the game must be placed in the Extensions folder located in the Systems Folder on your Macintosh. See Section 2 - Installing The Game.

Problem: "Unimplemented Trap" error message, using System 7.5.3.
Solution: Upgrade to System 7.5.5, available on Apple's web site as a free download (see Section 4 - Memory Troubleshooting).

SECTION 6 - FILE NAMES AND LOCATIONS

King's Quest VII has two install options. The small install option plays the game from the CD ROM drive. The game only needs to have the files listed below installed to the hard drive. The large install option creates a folder named "King's Quest VII HD" on your hard drive. This folder will contain eight items with the following names: Data 1, Data 2, GenMIDI.drv, King's Quest VII HD, Midi Utilities, Mt32Driver.drv, Read Me and Sound Driver.drv.

The following system files will also need to be installed:

Sound Manager - This is the extension for Sound Manager 3.0 and is required for King's Quest VII. This extension should be placed in the Extensions folder within the System Folder on your hard drive. If you are using System 7.5 you do not need to install Sound Manager 3.0, (it is built into the system software).

Sound - This is a new Control Panel item for use with Sound Manager 3.0. This item should be placed in the Control Panels folder in the System Folder on your hard drive.

QuickTime™ - This is the extension for QuickTime, which allows your Macintosh to play movies created with Apple's QuickTime technology. The introduction and the endings for King's Quest VII are examples of QuickTime movies. To view these parts of the game you must have the QuickTime extension installed in your Extensions folder in the System Folder on your computer.

Apple Multimedia Tuner - This extension enhances the way your Macintosh plays QuickTime movies. The Apple Multimedia Tuner will improve the display quality of movies and will allow you to view the movies at more than 256 colors. This extension must be placed in the Extensions folder within the System Folder in order to be enabled.

SECTION 7 - COMPATIBILITY ISSUES

System 7.5 - King's Quest VII is compatible with System 7.5. If you are using or plan to use System 7.5, be aware that the newer system uses more memory. A full install of System 7.5 will use over three MB of RAM; once you add your favorite extensions you could be using as much of five MB of RAM. With System 7.5, you may find it more difficult to free up enough memory for King's Quest VII. See Section 4 - Memory Troubleshooting.

Power Macintosh - King's Quest VII is designed to work with Macintosh computers with a 68040 processor; it is not a Power Mac native application. A Power Mac does not have a 68040 processor, but it is capable of emulating a 68040 processor. King's Quest VII can be played on a Power Mac because of the emulation process, however, since the game is running in an emulation mode, it may run slower than native Power Mac applications. Also be aware that the system software on Power Mac uses more memory than the system software on a 68040-based Macintosh. If you have difficulty freeing up enough memory for King's Quest VII, please see Section 4 - Memory Troubleshooting.

AV Macintosh - Because AV systems handle memory differently than other Macintosh systems, King's Quest VII may require more than 5000 K of free memory on your AV Macintosh. You will get a "System Error Type 1" if your Macintosh encounters this problem. See Section 3 - Common Startup Problems for more information.
