SECTION 2 - INSTALLING THE GAME AND INSTALLATION PROBLEMS

Insert the the first Phantasmagoria CD into your CD ROM drive - it is in a paper envelope in the game box. After your Macintosh mounts the CD, double-click on it to open it up. You will see several folders in a window named PHANT CD #1. Drag the folder "Phantasmagoria" to your hard drive. (You will still need to have the CD in your CD ROM drive.) Move to your hard drive and double-click on the "Phantasmagoria" folder. To start the game, double-click on the "Phantasmagoria 68K" icon (for 68040 systems) or "Phantasmagoria PPC" (for Power Macs).

SECTION 3 - MEMORY TROUBLESHOOTING

Phantasmagoria requires 5000K of free memory for the 68040 version, and 9500K of free memory for the Power Mac native version. You must have a Mac with at least 8 MB of RAM in order to have enough free memory for the 68040 version, and 16MB of RAM for the Power Mac version. Virtual memory or utilities such as RAM Doubler will not decrease the system memory requirements for the game - you must still have 8 MB of physical RAM for the 68040 and 16MB for the Power Mac.

Determine the amount of RAM and the free memory on your Macintosh. From the Apple pull down menu, choose "About this Macintosh...". The amount of RAM on your computer will be listed next to "Built-In Memory". (If you do not have this value use the number listed next to "Total Memory".) 8 MB of RAM is equal to 8,192 K of memory. 16MB of RAM is equal to 16,384 K of memory. Once you have verified that you have enough RAM, check your free memory. This will be listed as the "Largest Unused Block." In order to play Phantasmagoria you will need to have 5000K of available memory for 68040 processors, and 9500K for Power Macs. If you do not have enough available memory, follow the steps below:

Change your memory settings. From the Apple pull-down menu, choose "Control Panels". From here, select the "Memory" module. In the memory module, lower the Disk Cache to 32K, turn off Virtual Memory, turn off the RAM Disk and choose "On" for 32-Bit Addressing (68040 only). Once you have done this, you must restart the Macintosh before attempting to start the game.

Turn off unneeded extensions and control panel devices. Extensions and control panel devices (cdevs) use memory and can cause conflicts with other programs running on your Mac. You should try playing the game with the unneeded extensions and control panel devices disabled. You can disable unneeded extensions and cdevs in two ways. The preferred method is to use Extensions Manager-otherwise you will need to manually disable them.

If Extensions Manager is installed on your computer, double-click on its icon in your Control Panels. Start by clicking on the "All Off" button. Scroll through the list of items and select the items you will need to play Phantasmagoria. Choose EM Extension, Apple CD-ROM, Sound Manager and Sound. Now click on the "Sets" pull down menu. Choose "Save Set..." and enter a name for your Phantasmagoria set. With only the set for the game selected, restart your Mac. Check your memory and try to play the game. (For more information on using Extensions Manager see the documentation for your system software or the readme file with Extension Manager.)

To manually disable extensions and cdevs you will need to move them out of the Extensions folder and the Control Panels folder on your hard drive. To do this, open the System Folder and create a new folder named Backup. Now go into the Extensions folder. Phantasmagoria requires two extensions: Sound Manager 3.0 and Apple CD-ROM. Move all of the other items in your Extensions folder into the Backup folder. Once you have done this, close the Extensions folder and open the Control Panels folder. Move all of the items from the Control Panels folder into the Backup folder except Sound and Memory . Choose Restart from your Special pull down menu and start the game. CAUTION: The items moved into the Backup folder will not be active until they are returned to the Extensions folder or Control Panels folder and the computer is restarted. When you are done playing the game, move all of the extensions and cdevs in the Backup folder back into your System folder. When it asks "put them where they belong", choose OK and your system will be restored.

If you are using version 7.5.3 of the Mac Operating System. There is a free upgrade to System 7.5.5 available from Apple that fixes memory management problems that might effect Phantasmagoria. The upgrade is available from Apple's WWW site (http://www.apple.com). We highly recommend that 7.5.3 users upgrade before playing Phantasmagoria.

SECTION 4 - COMMON GAME PROBLEMS

Problem: The installation instructions in the Phantasmagoria booklet are for MS DOS and Windows!
Solution: The booklet for Phantasmagoria is generic. Specific installation instuctions for Macintosh are on an insert card included with the game. Please note that the insert card states that 12 MB of hard drive space are necessary for installation. This is incorrect - you will need 30 MB of available hard drive space. See Section 2 - Installing the Game for further assistance.

Problem: The game will not install due to insufficient hard drive space despite having 13 or more MB available.
Solution: The insert card packaged with the game is incorrect. Installation of Phantasmagoria requires 30 MB of hard drive space.

Problem: When trying to start the game you get a message stating, "There is not enough memory to open "Phantasmagoria" x,xxxK needed, x,xxxK available).".
Solution: You need to free up more memory for the game. See Section 3 - Memory Troubleshooting for help freeing up memory.

Problem: The game gets an "System Error Type 1" after startup.
Solution: This messages indicates that the Macintosh needs more memory to run the application. On some Macintosh computers Phantasmagoria may need more than stated minimum amount of memory. On the hard drive, open the "Phantasmagoria" folder and single click on the "Phantasmagoria 68K" or "Phantasmagoria PPC" icon. Choose Get Info from the Edit pull down menu. Increase the value for Minimum Size by 200 kb and Preferred Size by 1200 kb. The Macintosh will now use more memory to run Phantasmagoria. If the error continues, increase the values for Minimum and Preferred size by 100K increments until the problem is eliminated.

Problem: When trying to start the game you get the message "This Sierra game requires Sound Manager 3.0. (Included in you game folder. See your installation guide.)". Please note that the error message contains a misspelling.
Solution: Sound Manager 3.0 is an extension that must be in the "Extensions" folder within your "System Folder" for the game to run. Put Phantasmagoria CD #1 in your drive and open it up on your desktop. Open the "System Extensions" folder and highlight both the "Sound" and "Sound Manager" icons. Drag these to the System folder on your hard drive. As the files copy, you will see the message "These items need to be stored in special places inside the System Folder in order to be available to the Macintosh. Put them where they belong?" for each. Respond "Yes" for both files. Restart your Macintosh and play the game.

Problem: "At least one game file could not be found..." error message when starting the game.
Solution: This message will appear if the Phantasmagoria CD is not in the drive when you start up the game. Make sure that the icon for the CD actually appears on the desktop before clicking on the Phantasmagoria icon.

Problem: "Unimplemented Trap" error message when saving or restoring a game.
Solution: This means that the saved game file is corrupted - you will need to start a new game at the beginning of your current chapter. This can be caused by saving a game at the conclusion of a chapter. For best results, open up your hard drive icon, delete the existing "PHANT Saves" and save future games at the beginning of chapters instead of the end.

Problem: "Unimplemented Trap" error message when switching game CD's.
Solution: This is caused by running the game directly from the CD. Refer to Section 2 - Installing The Game for full instructions on installing the game to the hard drive.

Problem: "Unimplemented Trap" error message using System 7.5.3.
Solution: Upgrade to System 7.5.5, available for downloading from Apple's web site. See Section 3 - Memory Troubleshooting.

Problem: Game locks up. Mouse cursor moves but nothing will highlight. Both the skull or eye icons on the game interface are missing.
Solution: This is caused by installing the game, watching the introduction and immediately starting a new game in any chapter other than the first one. To resolve this, simply delete the game and reinstall it. When done, either skip the intro or watch the intro and start in Chapter 1.

Problem: Colors in the game are distorted.
Solution: Phantasmagoria uses 256 colors; using less or more colors may cause color distortion. You will need to configure your Macintosh to use 256 colors. Go to the Apple menu, choose Control Panels and select Monitors, then double-click on the 256 color option.

Problem: "System Error Type 11" error message during game play. (Phantasmagoria PPC only)
Solution: Pull down the Apple menu, choose Control Panels and then the Memory module. If the Modern Memory Manager is turned off, turn it on and restart your system. Start a new game in your current chapter and the problem should be resolved. If it persists, do the following: Delete the "PHANT Saves" folder from your hard drive. Then, highlight the "Phantasmagoria 68k" icon in the "Phantasmagoria" folder on your hard drive. Pull down the File menu and choose Get Info. Raise the Minimum and Preferred Size values up to 9500 kb. Click on OK and use the "Phantasmagoria 68k" icon when you want to play the game.

Problem: "Application Error 33" error message during game play. (Phantasmagoria PPC only)
Solution: This will happen in conjunction with the "System Error Type 11" listed previously. See above.

SECTION 5 - FILE NAMES AND LOCATIONS

Phantasmagoria installation creates a folder named "Phantasmagoria" on your hard drive. This folder will contain six items with the names: Phantasmagoria 68K, Phantasmagoria PPC, Data1, Data13, PDOCO.TXT, and ReadMe.

In addition to these game files, Phantasmagoria may add the following system files:

Sound Manager - This is the extension for Sound Manager 3.0 and is required for Phantasmagoria. This extension should be placed in the Extensions folder within the System Folder on your hard drive. If you are using System 7.5 you do not need to install Sound Manager 3.0, it is built into the system software.

Sound - This is a new Control Panel item for use with Sound Manager 3.0. This item should be placed in the Control Panels folder in the System Folder on your hard drive.

SECTION 6 - COMPATIBILITY ISSUES

System 7.5 - Phantasmagoria is compatible with System 7.5. If you are using or plan to use System 7.5, be aware that the newer system uses more memory. A full install of System 7.5 will use over three MB of RAM; once you add your favorite extensions you could be using as much of five MB of RAM. With System 7.5, you may find it more difficult to free up enough memory for Phantasmagoria. See Section 3 - Memory Troubleshooting.

AV Macintosh - Because AV systems handle memory differently than other Macintosh systems, Phantasmagoria may require more than 5000 K of free memory on your AV Macintosh. You will get a "System Error Type 1" if your Macintosh encounters this problem. See Section 5 - Common Game Problems for more information.

Power Macintosh - Phantasmagoria is designed to work with Macintosh computers either as a 68040 native (a "normal" Mac) application or as a Power Mac native application. Phantasmagoria can be played on a Power Mac in native mode - with the "Phantasmagoria PPC" icon - as long as the system has 16MB of physical RAM. Because of the emulation process, however, it is possible to also make the game run in 68040 emulation with the "Phantasmagoria 68k" icon. This is not recommended because it will run very slowly during the more memory intensive sections of the game unless you increase the Required and Preferred Sizes for memory available to the game. For assistance with this, refer to Section 5 - Common Game Problems under the problem "System Error Type 1".

SECTION 7-OBTAINING A SIERRA PATCH DISK...

There is one patch available for Phantasmagoria Macintosh. This patch, PHANTAS PATCH, corrects the following:

  1. Corrects overall performance.
  2. Sound quality improved.
  3. Game now detects whether Modern Memory Manager is on. It must be on to use the PPC version of the game. This prevents "System Error 11" and "Application Error 33" messages.
  4. Fixes an "Unimplemented Trap Error" which occurs if the "Quit" option is chosen at the end of a chapter and the game is saved in the next chapter.

The patch can be downloaded from www.sierra.com/support/technical/updates/content.html. You can also request a patch disk be mailed to you by calling Sierra Technical Support at 425-644-4343, faxing to 425-644-7697 or writing to Sierra Technical Support, PO Box 85006, Belleuve, WA 98015-8506.
